I was exploring a nearby natural foods market yesterday when an open jar of vanilla beans caught my nose. I asked the lady snatching them out of the jar what she used them for. She said, "Oh, everything! I put it on my cereal, in my tea, sometimes on fish." Whaaa? Okay, well, but they're like $10 each, right? "Oh, no! They're 98 cents!" Whaaaaaaa? So now I'm all excited to experiment with them. Maybe an orange-vanilla bean cupcake or the classic vanilla bean ice cream. And who can forget this homemade vanilla extract tutorial? Also, let's talk about how freaky cool the vanilla bean looks. It scares and mystifies me and its withery skin gives me the heebie jeebs. And yet I can't wait to split it open and scrape it up. If it smells that good in a jar standing five feet away, what will opening it do for the scent in my kitchen? Ooooh wee, can't wait to find out.

I've always wanted to just scrape scrape like they do on TV. 98 cents! you're kidding.
ReplyDeleteTrent and I actually found vanilla bean paste half-price at -- get this -- Tony's Meats, and it is the bomb! All the yumminess and texture and flavor of vanilla beans without all the work. Good luck with your experimenting. Let us know what you make!
